Emotions Monster Book Complete Unit Bundle
$0.00
In this interdisciplinary unit, students will think like a children’s book author and illustrator as they move through the creative process of ideating, writing, and publishing a fictional story while learning how to process big emotions. This unit is perfect for students of all ages and abilities, offering a joyful and non-intimidating entry point into the creative writing and artistic process.
First, they will anchor in a common text through a group read aloud of The Color Monster by Anna Llenas where they consider how big emotions impact the main character. Then students will collectively develop a class anchor chart to discuss common emotions and strategies for emotional regulation. From there, students will grow their artistic and imaginative skills by engaging in character design and development. From there, engage in a freeform story brainstorm process and practice their speaking, listening, and peer feedback skills. Students will then engage in revision as they apply their peer’s feedback to the layout of their story utilizing a professional storyboarding format. Finally, students add text to their story, design final copies of their book, and celebrate by reading their stories to the community through a final publishing party.
This flexible unit offers teachers a non-intimidating, creative entry point into teaching writing and art, while helping students build confidence, empathy, and authentic self-expression.
